Stayed in Wilkes County until approximately 1821. On Monroe Co., TN Census

in 1830 & 1850. Assignment of children to the two spouses may not be correct.

Indeed, it is not clear that he had a second spouse. He was a veteran of the War of 1812.

 

According to Wilkes Co. NC records he was living with 9 children on Moravian Creek in 1799. James McCoin suggests he may have been caring for someone else's children.  1810 census gives 1 male 26-44, 4 males under 16, 4 females under 16, 1 female 16-25 & 1 female 26-44.  Listed children do not agree well with this data.

 

In addition to the children listed here other Wilkes County Grayson marriages likely involve individuals from William's line since he was the only one to stay behind in NC. These include Susannah Grayson who married William Hampton on 2/12/1825, Martha Grayson who married Joel J. Laws on 9/27/1836 and William E. Grayson who married Lucinda Baits on 12/4/1845.

 

 

        The identity of the children of William Grayson and their wife assignments are uncertain. The following is the current best interpretation. He was definitely married first to Emila Crouch and their children may be:

Jessee was in Wilkes Co. until at least 1805, Knox County tax list in 1806, Bledsoe County in 1807, Marion Co., TN by 1820.  Enlisted in military on 10/1/1814. His wife's name may be Mary as that is his first daughter's name. Jessee was on 1830 Marion County census in 1830 with three daughter's. Jim McCoin speculates that Elizabeth L. Grayson was one of these.

"Adjoining Joseph Grayson where Martha now lives". Dennis Gertz discovered an 1887 Goodspeed Gibson County Biography on Benjamin’s son John A. Grayson that has greatly clarified this line. Notes

Burton L. Garten suggests that Nancy died in Martin Co., In. They are believed to have left Knox County for Martin Co. around 1826. The TN property that had been inherited from Solomon Edmonston  was apparently transferred to John Grayson. This Nancy has been confused with Nancy 2 Grayson daughter of Benjamin1 Grayson resulting in a major inaccuracy in many histories.

Notes

Benjamin was a Lt. in the War of 1812 under Col. Wm. Johnson and Captain Stewart in the 3rd Reg. E. TN Militia. Also served  in E. TN Vol. Infantry. According to biography of his son Alfred in Marshall township history, Benjamin & Nancy had 11 children. Alfred being the 4th. When Alfred was four (1826) family returned to TN. Later they removed to Lawrence Co., Indiana.

According to James McCoin, Joseph had at least 7 children, 4 of which

are listed. Achsaht & Benjamin D. were both born in Gallatin, Illinois.

Benjamin was best man for Joseph & Elizabeth. Elizabeth named her first daughter Dicy after Joseph's wife. We deduce that all three are probably at least half siblings. Joseph was a veteran of the War of 1812. Jim McCoin says he moved to Illinois after 1830.

Info from Jim McCoin & Logan Co., Arkansas heritage book. They were living in Saline Co., IL in 1834, Missouri by 1836. Jessie came to Arkansas in about 1838 from Mississippi (Jim McCoin says he lived in Missouri from 1836-1839 & Scott Co. Ark from 1843-1851) and settled on Sugar Creek in Scott County (now Logan County Ark.) A small community there is named for him. Two children given by Jim McCoin, Charles & Jessee are not listed in the Logan Co. Heritage book.  Margaret remarried to a Mr. Taylor who is listed in the 1870 census.

The will of a William B. Grayson was executed on Feb. 3, 1893 in Monroe Co., TN.  Executors were John B. Grayson and F. K. Berry. Witnessed by F. K. Berry and John Rines. However, John Rines is the husband of a sister of a later Mary E. Grayson who married a John B. Grayson in October of 1865 (see detailed info in William B. Grayson vs Archd. Bacome et al., filed 2/10/1877, pg. 629 Monroe Co., TN Chancery Court Records). Based on info in the court records I believe the 1893 will is likely to be for a different William B. which I have guessed to be this William B's son and the William B. who married Mary Harrison in 1865.

Bought 100 acres of land in Marion Co. on Nov. 19, 1831 from Thomas Golston (whose wife was Nancy Ward- sister of Elizabeth!?). Moved to Missouri according to letters. Land records were lost in a fire so the  next land purchase of record was when he bought Beaver Creek land on August 24th, 1860 from the Pacific RR Co. They divorced after the children were grown. When Benjamin left the county he sold the farm to his Sarah's husband and Elizabeth lived there until her death. Much of the info about BFG and his son GWG & grandson GDG was taken from the Phelps County Heritage book.  The listing of 10 of his 13 children was kindly provided by Jill Stafford.

A William H. Grayson served as a witness for Permilia Grayson Cline's War of 1812 Widow Claim in Bell County, Texas. He was 50 yrs old at time (5/22/1888) and had known Permilia for 40 years. This info is consistent with this William H. Grayson and hence he likely was living in Bell County, Texas by 1880.

We had previously attributed Eliza Arpe as a second spouse of William Harvey. However, his Texas descendants family history and the birth dates of his children with Roxanna argue strongly against this. It is not clear which William Grayson Eliza Arp was actually married too. Possibly it was #55, William B. Grayson but there are problems with that too.

The following info on William H.’s children is from Don & Joan in Texas.  They report the family can be found on the 1860 census in Jasper Co., MO, Washington o., Ark in 1870, Bell Co, TX in 1880 and Montague Co., TX in 1900.

He owned a farm in the Baker's Creek Community which he sold prior to building the George & sallie Ray house in Vonore near the Venore Methodist Church. Birth date was 6/8/1834 according to recorded tombstone in Grayson Cemetary.

Something is probably wrong, however, because sister was born on a different date in 1834.

1860 census lists Joseph Grayson age 10 who was born in Missouri- Quite

likely not their child based on ages and the fact Houston was probably not in

Mo.  James Grayson McCoin gives year of death as 1918, which is inconsistent with cemetery transcription recorded by Euline Harris.

 

Dr. Richard Grayson mentions a Walter C. Grayson who had 3 sons & 4 daughters and was deceased by 1974 as having been a son of William Grayson who was son of Houston Grayson. The info obtained from Dennis Gertz lists this William Grayson.

 

I previously had an Anderson Grayson, b.1875 listed as a son. Dennis Gertz does not list this person & he has been removed here.
